What are the cable sizes utilized in the throttle grips with switches?

There are various cable sizes utilized as determined by the number of switches within the throttle grips.

  • Cross Country Grip with PTT 2 conductor 22AWG cable, 2.95 mm

  • TO/GA grips 3 conductor 22AWG cable, 3.04 mm

  • COMMs Slider grip 4 conductor 22AWG cable, 3.52 mm

  • Show Grip with Smoke and PTT 5 conductor 22AWG cable, 4.13 mm

  • Show Grip with Pyro, Smoke and PTT 8 conductor 22AWG cable, 4.68 mm

The grips with electrical switches have a cable exit on the forward side of the outboard fence of the grip. just forward of the down structure of the throttle mechanism. Cabling has then been routed under heat shrink tubing down the front of the throttle mechanism to aircraft systems via the throttle bezel 3.94mm cut out, and or via dedicated loops through the panel reveal.

What are current ratings of the installed switches?

  • PTT and PYRO Normally open, momentary switches are rated at 3A @ 30Vdc which converts to 5A @ 12Vdc.

  • Rocker COMM/ICS switch rated at 10A @ 12Vdc.

  • Smoke rocker switch and LED is rated at 16A @ 12Vdc.

  • TO/GA Push Button Switch is a DPDT switch rated at 8A @ 12Vdc

Does the throttle overlay mate with the VANs Deluxe Throttle handle only?

The 3D overlay was designed, manufactured and is flying on the RV8/8A Deluxe throttle. It slips over a 1 inch throttle handle, with an interference fit, as a plug and play unit. The grip fits around the throttle mechanism using an “Anti-Rotation” cutout within the grip outboard fence. This prevents the grip from twisting around the throttle handle. The grip is also mechanically affixed on the throttle handle with an included fastener to prevent the throttle overlay from slipping inboard, off the throttle handle.

OEM throttle handles with differing diameters of 1 inch can certainly be evaluated and modifications made to the design, on a special order basis.

What is the function of a TO/GA switch?

The TO/GA hardware supports a Garmin G3X installation. The switch selects flight director Takeoff (on ground) or Go Around (in air) Mode.

A TO/GA button is a feature commonly found on FAR 25 aircraft that we can now have on our RVs too with flight directors. Simply put, pressing the TO/GA button gives you a wings-level, pitch-up flight director reference for takeoff (TO) or go-around (GA). If you have the TO/GA button connected to your GTN 6xx/7xx IFR navigator, it will automatically sequence to the missed approach procedure of the active flight plan. The pitch attitudes commanded in TO and GA modes are set to 5 degrees nose-up by default, and can be adjusted to suit your aircraft's characteristics.

What is the function of a VP-X system switch.

In conjunction with the EFIS to configure and monitor common systems, the compatible with a Vertical Power VP-X system install. The VP-X integrates many popular systems with electronic circuit breaker (ECB) technology. Systems like avionics, GPS, lights, motors and pumps are common. One of our 3DStick and Rudder throttle overlays incorporates a common switch to provides an engine start enable signal which in turn drives a solid state relay (which powers the starter). When engine rpm is over a certain amount, that start enable output is disabled. The ENGINE START switch LED will be on when the engine start switch is “hot”. The LED will turn off once the engine is running.

Do you interface with the Garmin G3X system?

Yes. I have done some noodling of many customer concepts tailored to the G3X system, some workable some not.   First off, I would need a definition of the type of throttle quadrant your attempting to modify. Secondly,  the switch logics that I supply are typically available from my previously used sources and I can usually get the internal real-estate to work.   Using those switch models, I quickly apply them to existing Stick and Rudder designs for compatibility and suitably with ergonomics and clearance from the other control levers, like the PROP.       To do a proper evaluation, I do a study on an electronic model that would have the prop lever and knob represented and then give you the customer an evaluation of doability.  The most recent, the RV-8 "HOTAS" COMMS/FLAP Throttle Grip, "Deluxe tube mount".
